50.8 x 61 cm
This fully developed study dates from the 1840s when the artist's looser style started to become more evident, particularly in his oil studies. This was most probably a study for a larger composition, however the resulting picture is unknown. Herring himself owned a white arab named Imaum, who he used as an equine model repeatedly and who originally belonged to Queen Victoria.
